Context of Isaiah 49:18
16See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins. 17Soon your descendants will come back, and all who are trying to destroy you will go away. Look around you and see, for all your children will come back to you. As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “they will be like jewels or bridal ornaments for you to display. 19“Even the most desolate parts of your abandoned land will soon be crowded with your people. Your enemies who enslaved you will be far away. 20The generations born in exile will return and say, ‘We need more room! It’s crowded here!’

Commentaries on Isaiah 49:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Bind them on thee, as a bride doeth "Bind them about thee, as a bride her jewels" - The end of the sentence is manifestly imperfect. Does a bride bind her children, or her new subjects, about her? Sion clothes herself with her children, as a bride clothes herself, - with what? some other thing certainly. The Septuagint help us out in this difficulty, and supply the lost word: ̔ · as a bride her ornaments. כלה ככליה kichleyha callah, or כליה ככלה kecallah…Read the comment

All these gather themselves - That is, from a far country, from the north, the west, and the south, Isaiah 49:12. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-23Verses 18-23 Zion is addressed as an afflicted widow, bereaved of her children. Numbers flock to her, and she is assured that they come to be a comfort to her. There are times when the church is desolate and few in number; yet its desolations shall not last for ever, and God will repair them. God can raise up friends for returning Israelites, even among Gentiles. They shall bring their children, and make them thy children. Let all deal tenderly and…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. As Zion is often compared to a bride (Is 54:5), so the accession of converts is like bridal ornaments ("jewels," Is 62:3; Mal 3:17). Her literal children are, however, more immediately meant, as the context refers to their restoration; and only secondarily to her spiritual children by conversion to Christ. Israel shall be the means of the final complete conversion of the nations (Mi 5:7; Ro 11:12, 15). as a bride--namely, binds on her ornaments.Read the comment
