Context of Matthew 17:5
3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. 4Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” 6The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. 7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”

Commentaries on Matthew 17:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5A bright cloud overshadowed them - Or as six MSS. and Ephraim read it, a cloud of light, ; which reading Griesbach has admitted into the text. As a bright cloud, or a cloud of light could not overshadow, or cast any kind of shade, the word should be translated, surrounded them. A cloud was frequently the symbol of the Divine presence; but such a cloud had always something very remarkable in its appearance. Ezekiel, Ezekiel 1:4, represents it as a great…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5A bright cloud overshadowed them - The word “overshadow” here means, rather, to “be diffused” or “spread” over them. It does not mean that it made a shade. A cloud was the symbol of the divine presence. Thus, God went before the Israelites in a cloudy pillar - dark by day and bright by night Exodus 14:19-20; he appeared on Mount Sinai in a cloud bright by fire Exodus 24:15-17; and a cloud, the symbol of the divine presence - called the Shechinah - dwelt…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5A bright cloud enveloped them: In the Old Testament, a cloud often showed God’s presence with Israel during the time of Moses (see Exodus 24:15–18; 25:8; 29:45–46; 40:34–38). My beloved Son: This confirmed what Peter had already declared about Jesus (Matthew 16:16–17). The disciples were told to listen to Jesus because he is God’s Son. As a prophet, he reveals God’s will (11:27; see Deuteronomy 18:15, 18; Acts 3:22–23; 7:37).Read the comment
