Context of Mark 15:33
31The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! 32Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him. At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 34Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” 35Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.

Commentaries on Mark 15:33
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-41Verses 33-41 There was a thick darkness over the land, from noon until three in the afternoon. The Jews were doing their utmost to extinguish the Sun of Righteousness. The darkness signified the cloud which the human soul of Christ was under, when he was making it an offering for sin. He did not complain that his disciples forsook him, but that his Father forsook him. In this especially he was made sin for us. When Paul was to be offered as a sacrifice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land: The whole land likely refers to all of Judah. The darkness was both real and symbolic. It showed the evil nature of what was happening and gave a sign of the judgment that Jesus said would come on Israel (see 13:1–31; 14:58; 15:29).Read the comment
