Context of Acts 4:34
32All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them 35and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. 36For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.

Commentaries on Acts 4:34
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34Neither was there any among them that lacked - It was customary with the Jews to call the poor together, to eat of the sacrifices, but as the priests, etc., were incensed against Christ and Christianity, consequently the Christian poor could have no advantage of this kind; therefore, by making a common stock for the present necessity, the poor were supplied; so there was none among them that lacked. This provision therefore of the community of goods…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34That lacked - That was in want, or whose needs were not supplied by the others. As many as - The word used here is employed in a large, indefinite sense; but it would be improper to press it so as to suppose that every individual that became a Christian sold at once all his property. The sense doubtless is, that this was done “when it was necessary:” they parted with whatever property was needful to supply the needs of their poor brethren. That it was…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-37Verses 32-37 The disciples loved one another. This was the blessed fruit of Christ's dying precept to his disciples, and his dying prayer for them. Thus it was then, and it will be so again, when the Spirit shall be poured upon us from on high. The doctrine preached was the resurrection of Christ; a matter of fact, which being duly explained, was a summary of all the duties, privileges, and comforts of Christians. There were evident fruits of Christ's…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-35The sharing among the early believers was remarkable (see also 2:44–45; compare 6:1). They were united in heart and mind (they thought alike and shared the same purpose). They freely shared what they owned to meet the needs of other believers. This sharing was voluntary and not forced. It responded to real needs in the community and was motivated by Christian love and care for one another.Read the comment
