Make no mistake about this. 15These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:

Commentaries on Acts 2:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Peter, standing up with the eleven - They probably spoke by turns, not altogether; but Peter began the discourse. All ye that dwell at Jerusalem - ̔ would be better translated by the word sojourn, because these were not inhabitants of Judea, but the strangers mentioned in Acts 2:9-11, who had come up to the feast.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14But Peter - This was in accordance with the natural temperament of Peter. He was bold, forward, ardent; and he rose now to defend the apostles of Jesus Christ, and Christ himself, from an injurious charge. Not daunted by ridicule or opposition, he felt that now was the time for preaching the gospel to the crowd that had been assembled by curiosity. No ridicule should deter Christians from an honest avowal of their opinions, and a defense of the operations…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 Peter's sermon shows that he was thoroughly recovered from his fall, and thoroughly restored to the Divine favour; for he who had denied Christ, now boldly confessed him. His account of the miraculous pouring forth of the Spirit, was designed to awaken the hearers to embrace the faith of Christ, and to join themselves to his church. It was the fulfilling the Scripture, and the fruit of Christ's resurrection and ascension, and proof of both…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-36This is the first of about 30 speeches in Acts and one of the most important. It marks the beginning of the Christian church. It is a typical example of the preaching of the apostles. The apostles proclaimed: that the Old Testament promises came true in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the promised Messiah; that the apostles were eyewitnesses of the public ministry of Jesus and were his chosen representatives; that people must turn away…Read the comment
