Context of Matthew 24:45

43But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods.

Commentaries on Matthew 24:45

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 45Who then is a faithful and wise servant - All should live in the same expectation of the coming of Christ, which a servant has with respect to the return of his master, who, in departing for a season, left the management of his affairs to him; and of which management he is to give an exact account on his master's return. Here is an abstract of the duties of a minister of Christ. He is appointed, not by himself, but by the vocation and mission of his…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45-51Verses 45-51 This passage is, in fact, “a parable,” though it is not expressly so called. The design is to show that his disciples should act as if they were each moment expecting his return. This he illustrates by the conduct of a servant who did not expect his master soon to return, who acted with great impropriety, and who was accordingly punished. Matthew 24:45 Who, then, is a faithful and wise servant … - By the conduct of a faithful and wise servant…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 42-51Verses 42-51 To watch for Christ's coming, is to maintain that temper of mind which we would be willing that our Lord should find us in. We know we have but a little time to live, we cannot know that we have a long time to live; much less do we know the time fixed for the judgment. Our Lord's coming will be happy to those that shall be found ready, but very dreadful to those that are not. If a man, professing to be the servant of Christ, be an unbeliever…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45servant: Those who were listening to Jesus might have thought of God's special servants, the prophets and lawgivers. But Jesus often used servant as a metaphor, so it is likely he was describing every disciple's responsibility (see Matthew 10:24–25; 13:27–28; 18:23–35; 20:26).Read the comment
