Context of Luke 7:22
20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’ ” 21At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” 24After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-35Verses 19-35 To his miracles in the kingdom of nature, Christ adds this in the kingdom of grace, To the poor the gospel is preached. It clearly pointed out the spiritual nature of Christ's kingdom, that the messenger he sent before him to prepare his way, did it by preaching repentance and reformation of heart and life. We have here the just blame of those who were not wrought upon by the ministry of John Baptist or of Jesus Christ himself. They made a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22The blind receive sight, the lame walk: The prophet Isaiah describes God’s salvation as the renewal of his fallen creation (Isaiah 26:19; 29:18–19; 35:5–6; 61:1–2). Jesus did not come to end Roman rule over Judea. This may explain why he leaves out the words "proclaim liberty to the captives" when he quotes Isaiah 61:1. He came for a greater purpose: to reverse the effects of sin and death.Read the comment
