Context of Luke 7:22
20So the men came to Jesus and said, “John the Baptist sent us to You to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One (the Messiah), or should we look for someone else?’ ” 21At that very hour Jesus healed many people of sicknesses and infirmities and evil spirits; and He gave [the gracious gift of] sight to many who were blind. So He replied to them, “Go and tell John about everything you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the good news (gospel) preached to them. 23Blessed [joyful, spiritually favored] is he who does not take offense at Me.” 24When John’s messengers left, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: “What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-35Verses 19-35 To his miracles in the kingdom of nature, Christ adds this in the kingdom of grace, To the poor the gospel is preached. It clearly pointed out the spiritual nature of Christ's kingdom, that the messenger he sent before him to prepare his way, did it by preaching repentance and reformation of heart and life. We have here the just blame of those who were not wrought upon by the ministry of John Baptist or of Jesus Christ himself. They made a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22The blind receive sight, the lame walk: The prophet Isaiah describes God’s salvation as the renewal of his fallen creation (Isaiah 26:19; 29:18–19; 35:5–6; 61:1–2). Jesus did not come to end Roman rule over Judea. This may explain why he leaves out the words "proclaim liberty to the captives" when he quotes Isaiah 61:1. He came for a greater purpose: to reverse the effects of sin and death.Read the comment
