Context of Acts 8:39
38And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Commentaries on Acts 8:39
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39The Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip - Perhaps this means no more than that the Holy Spirit suggested to the mind of Philip that he should withdraw abruptly from the eunuch, and thus leave him to pursue his journey, reflecting on the important incidents which had taken place. Some suppose that the angel of the Lord, and the Spirit of the Lord, are the same person throughout this chapter. There is a remarkable reading in the Codex Alexandrinus which…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 39Out of the water - ̓ ekThis preposition stands opposed to ̓ eis“into”; and as that may mean to, so this may mean From; if that means into, this means here out of. The Spirit of the Lord - See Acts 8:29. The Spirit had suggested to Philip to go to meet the eunuch, and the same Spirit, now that he had fulfilled the design of his going there, directed his departure. Caught away - This phrase has been usually understood of a forcible or miraculous removal of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 Philip was directed to go to a desert. Sometimes God opens a door of opportunity to his ministers in very unlikely places. We should study to do good to those we come into company with by travelling. We should not be so shy of all strangers as some affect to be. As to those of whom we know nothing else, we know this, that they have souls. It is wisdom for men of business to redeem time for holy duties; to fill up every minute with something…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39-40After the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, he traveled north along the coast from Azotus. Azotus is another name for Ashdod (see 1 Samuel 5:1–7; Nehemiah 13:23–24; Isaiah 20:1). He preached in every town until he reached Caesarea, where he later settled (see Acts 21:8). Caesarea: Caesarea Maritima was a major port on the Mediterranean Sea. It was the center of Roman government in Judea. Herod the Great built it around 22 to 9 BC and named it to…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 39-4039-40. the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip--To deny [as Meyer, Olshausen, Bloomfield] the miraculous nature of Philip's disappearance, is vain. It stands out on the face of the words, as just a repetition of what we read of the ancient prophets, in 1Ki 18:12; 2Ki 2:16. And the same word (as Bengel remarks) is employed to express a similar idea in 2Co 12:2, 4; 1Th 4:17. the eunuch saw him no more--nor, perhaps, for very joy, cared to see him…Read the comment
