Context of Matthew 26:37
35Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all the disciples said the same thing. 36Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became anguished and distressed. 38Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.” 39Going a little farther, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-46Verses 36-46 He who made atonement for the sins of mankind, submitted himself in a garden of suffering, to the will of God, from which man had revolted in a garden of pleasure. Those are best prepared to suffer with Christ, who have by faith beheld his glory. The words used denote the most entire dejection…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 37He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee: Peter, James, and John were probably the leaders of the apostles. They received special revelation (Peter, James, and John were present at the Transfiguration, where they saw Jesus transformed on the mountain, Matthew 17:1–13). They stayed with Jesus during this difficult time. Jesus felt sorrow and distress as he thought about the Father’s plan for him (see Matthew 27:45–46). Though he had never sinned…Read the comment
