Context of Mark 6:50
48He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. As the night was ending, he came to them walking on the sea, for he wanted to pass by them. 49When they saw him walking on the water they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” 51Then he went up with them into the boat, and the wind ceased. They were completely astonished, 52because they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 14:22-36. Mark 6:52 They considered not the miracle of the loaves - They did not remember or call to mind the “power” which Jesus had shown in feeding the five thousand by a miracle, and that, having done that, he had power also to save them from the storm. Their heart was hardened - Their “mind” was dull to perceive it. This does not mean that they were “opposed” to Jesus, or that they had…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 The church is often like a ship at sea, tossed with tempests, and not comforted: we may have Christ for us, yet wind and tide against us; but it is a comfort to Christ's disciples in a storm, that their Master is in the heavenly mount, interceding for them. And no difficulties can hinder Christ's appearance for his people, when the set time is come. He silenced their fears, by making himself known to them. Our fears are soon satisfied, if our…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 49-50The disciples were very afraid, and this reaction makes sense. People cannot walk on water, so they thought they were seeing a ghost. As in many times when God appears (divine manifestations, when God shows himself), the Lord spoke words of comfort: "Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid." It was not a ghost but Jesus (their friend, Savior, and Lord). It is I : Jesus walking on the sea and calming the storm were miracles (acts of God’s power). Because…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5050. For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: It is I; be not afraid--There is something in these two little words--given by Matthew, Mark and John (Mt 14:27; Mr 6:50; Joh 6:20)--"It is I," which from the mouth that spake it and the circumstances in which it was uttered, passes the power of language to express. Here were they in the midst of a raging sea, their little bark the…Read the comment
