Context of Mark 13:19
17Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! 18Pray that it may not be in winter. For in those days there will be suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, or ever will happen. 20And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved. But because of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut them short. 21Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe him.

Commentaries on Mark 13:19
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 The Jews in rebelling against the Romans, and in persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within less than forty years after this. Such destruction and desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history. Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19For those will be days of tribulation unseen from the beginning of God’s creation until now: This kind of hyperbole (intentional exaggeration for emphasis) is common in Hebrew and Aramaic patterns of speech. It emphasizes the terror of that time and should not be understood as a precise comparison with every other disaster in history. and never to be seen again: The events of 13:14–23 would not end human history. History continued after the destruction of…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be--Such language is not unusual in the Old Testament with reference to tremendous calamities. But it is matter of literal fact that there was crowded into the period of the Jewish war an amount and complication of suffering perhaps unparalleled; as the narrative of Josephus, examined closely and arranged under…Read the comment
