Context of Luke 5:37
35But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them, at that time they will fast.” 36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old garment. If he does, he will have torn the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38Instead new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39No one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 37The new wine will burst the bottles - These old bottles would not be able to stand the fermentation of the new wine, as the old sewing would be apt to give way. It is scarcely necessary to remark, that the eastern bottles are made of skins; generally those of goats.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-39Verses 27-39 It was a wonder of Christ's grace, that he would call a publican to be his disciple and follower. It was a wonder of his grace, that the call was made so effectual. It was a wonder of his grace, that he came to call sinners to repentance, and to assure them of pardon. It was a wonder of his grace, that he so patiently bore the contradiction of sinners against himself and his disciples. It was a wonder of his grace, that he fixed the services…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-38a new garment … new wine: New cloth shrinks when it is washed and can tear old cloth. New wine expands as it ferments and can burst old, brittle wineskins. In both cases, both the old and the new are ruined. These examples show that the old and the new do not work well together. Jesus did not come to patch up the old covenant, but to bring a new one. The kingdom of God brings a new way of thinking and living.Read the comment
