Context of 2 Samuel 22:18

16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the Lord’s battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the Lord helped me. 20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 22:18

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-20David clearly explains how God listened to him (2 Samuel 22:7). He describes God's rescue as a theophany (a visible sign of God's presence; see study notes on Exodus 19:16–25; Deuteronomy 1:33), which reminds us of God's appearance at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:16–20; compare Judges 5:4–5).Read the comment
