Context of Revelation 22:12
10Then the angel said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy in this book because the time is near. 11Let those who don’t have God’s approval go without it, and let filthy people continue to be filthy. Let those who have God’s approval continue to have it, and let holy people continue to be holy.” “I’m coming soon! I will bring my reward with me to pay all people based on what they have done. 13I am the A and the Z, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. 14“Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12And behold, I come quickly - See the notes on Revelation 1:1, Revelation 1:3. These are undoubtedly the words of the Redeemer; and the meaning is, that the period when the unchanging sentence would be passed on each individual - on the unjust, the filthy, the righteous, and the holy - would not be remote. The design of this seems to be to impress on the mind the solemnity of the truth that the condition hereafter will soon be fixed, and to lead people to…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12Christ is coming soon to repay everyone, not just based on their faith, but according to their actions (see Revelation 2:23; 11:18; 14:13; 20:12–13; see also Proverbs 24:12; Matthew 16:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10). Not every statement of belief is sincere (John 2:23–25); true faith shows through actions (James 2:14–26). We are saved by God's grace and power in Christ. Our actions do not save us, but they show the seriousness of our confession and provide a…Read the comment
