Context of Luke 10:33
31“By chance, a priest was traveling along that road. When he saw the man, he went around him and continued on his way. 32Then a Levite came to that place. When he saw the man, he, too, went around him and continued on his way. “But a Samaritan, as he was traveling along, came across the man. When the Samaritan saw him, he felt sorry for the man, 34went to him, and cleaned and bandaged his wounds. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day the Samaritan took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. He told the innkeeper, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than that, I’ll pay you on my return trip.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33Samaritan is mentioned merely to show that he was a person from whom a Jew had no right to expect any help or relief, because of the enmity which subsisted between the two nations.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33A certain Samaritan - The Samaritans were the most inveterate foes of the Jews. They had no dealings with each other. See the notes at Matthew 10:5. It was this fact which rendered the conduct of this good man so striking, and which was thus set in strong contrast with the conduct of the priest and the Levite. “They” would not help their own afflicted, and wounded countryman. “He,” who could not be expected to aid a Jew, overcame all the usual hostility…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-37Verses 25-37 If we speak of eternal life, and the way to it, in a careless manner, we take the name of God in vain. No one will ever love God and his neighbour with any measure of pure, spiritual love, who is not made a partaker of converting grace. But the proud heart of man strives hard against these convictions. Christ gave an instance of a poor Jew in distress, relieved by a good Samaritan. This poor man fell among thieves, who left him about to die…Read the comment

After Assyria conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, Assyrian settlers married Israelites who remained in Samaria. Their descendants became known as Samaritans. Later, after the Judeans returned from Babylon, conflict grew between Jews and Samaritans (Ezra 4:1–24). The Samaritans built their own…Read the comment
