Context of John 19:34
32The soldiers broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with Jesus. 33When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. However, one of the soldiers stabbed Jesus’ side with his spear, and blood and water immediately came out. 35The one who saw this is an eyewitness. What he says is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth so that you, too, will believe. 36This happened so that the Scripture would come true: “None of his bones will be broken.”

Commentaries on John 19:34
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34With a spear pierced his side - The soldier who pierced our Lord's side has been called by the Roman Catholic writers Longinus, which seems to be a corruption of , lonche, a spear or dart, the word in the text. They moreover tell us that this man was converted - that it was he who said, Truly this was the Son of God - that he traveled into Cappadocia, and there preached the Gospel of Christ, and received the crown of martyrdom. But this deserves the same…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34One of the soldiers - One of those appointed to watch the bodies until they were dead. This man appears to have doubted whether he was dead, and, in order to see whether he was not yet sensible, he pierced him with his spear. The Jews designed that his legs should be broken, but this was prevented by the providence of God; yet in another way more satisfactory proof was obtained of his death than would have been by the breaking of his legs. This was so…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-37Verses 31-37 A trial was made whether Jesus was dead. He died in less time than persons crucified commonly did. It showed that he had laid down his life of himself. The spear broke up the very fountains of life; no human body could survive such a wound. But its being so solemnly attested, shows there was something peculiar in it. The blood and water that flowed out, signified those two great benefits which all believers partake of through Christ…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34To confirm that Jesus was dead, a Roman soldier stabbed his side with a spear. blood and water flowed out: This has several levels of meaning: The spear probably cut through the pericardium, the sack around the heart, releasing these fluids. John might have been thinking of more Passover symbolism. The Passover lamb’s blood had to flow as it died. The water flowing from the side of Jesus is similar to the language of "living water" that Jesus had…Read the comment
