Context of John 19:33
31Since it was Friday and the next day was an especially important day of rest—a holy day, the Jews didn’t want the bodies to stay on the crosses. So they asked Pilate to have the men’s legs broken and their bodies removed. 32The soldiers broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with Jesus. When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34However, one of the soldiers stabbed Jesus’ side with his spear, and blood and water immediately came out. 35The one who saw this is an eyewitness. What he says is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth so that you, too, will believe.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33Saw that he was dead - Saw by the indications of death on his person, and perhaps by the testimony of the centurion, Matthew 27:54. The death of Jesus was doubtless hastened by the intense agony of the garden, and the special sufferings endured as an atonement for sin on the cross. Compare Matthew 27:46.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-37Verses 31-37 A trial was made whether Jesus was dead. He died in less time than persons crucified commonly did. It showed that he had laid down his life of himself. The spear broke up the very fountains of life; no human body could survive such a wound. But its being so solemnly attested, shows there was something peculiar in it. The blood and water that flowed out, signified those two great benefits which all believers partake of through Christ…Read the comment

It was common to break the legs of those crucified with a tool. It caused them to stop breathing and bleed excessively because the victim could not push themselves up to breathe.Read the comment
