Context of John 19:35
33When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. 34However, one of the soldiers stabbed Jesus’ side with his spear, and blood and water immediately came out. The one who saw this is an eyewitness. What he says is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth so that you, too, will believe. 36This happened so that the Scripture would come true: “None of his bones will be broken.” 37Another Scripture passage says, “They will look at the person whom they have stabbed.”

Commentaries on John 19:35
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35He that saw it - Most probably John himself, who must have been pretty near the cross to have been able to distinguish between the blood and the water, as they issued from the side of our blessed Lord. And he knoweth - This appears to be an appeal to the Lord Jesus, for the truth of the testimony which he had now delivered. But why such a solemn appeal, unless there was something miraculous in this matter? It might appear to him necessary: Because the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35He that saw it - John himself. He is accustomed to speak of himself in the third person. His record is true - His testimony is true. Such was the known character of this writer, such his sacred regard for truth, that he could appeal to that with full assurance that all would put confidence in him. He often appeals thus to the fact that his testimony was known to be true. It would be well if all Christians had such a character that their word would be…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-37Verses 31-37 A trial was made whether Jesus was dead. He died in less time than persons crucified commonly did. It showed that he had laid down his life of himself. The spear broke up the very fountains of life; no human body could survive such a wound. But its being so solemnly attested, shows there was something peculiar in it. The blood and water that flowed out, signified those two great benefits which all believers partake of through Christ…Read the comment

He witnessed the events and gave an accurate account of the life of Jesus (see 21:24). This same confidence is also evident in the opening words of John's first letter (1 John 1:1–4).Read the comment
