Context of Acts 9:42
40Peter made everyone leave the room. He knelt and prayed. Then he turned toward the body and said, “Tabitha, get up!” Tabitha opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. 41Peter took her hand and helped her stand up. After he called the believers, especially the widows, he presented Tabitha to them. She was alive. The news about this spread throughout the city of Joppa, and as a result, many people believed in the Lord. 43Peter stayed in Joppa for a number of days with Simon, a leatherworker.

Commentaries on Acts 9:42
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 42Many believed in the Lord - That is, in Christ Jesus, in whose name and through whose power they understood this miracle to be wrought. This miracle, as well as that at Lydda, was not only the means of strengthening the faith of the disciples, and gaining credit to the cause of Christianity, but also of bringing many sincere converts to the Lord, so that the Church was thereby both builded up and multiplied.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 42And many believed - A similar effect followed when Jesus raised up Lazarus. See John 12:11. This was the first miracle of this kind that was performed by the apostles. The effect was that many believed. It was not merely a work of benevolence, in restoring to life one who contributed largely to the comfort of the poor, but it was a means of extending and establishing, as it was designed doubtless to do, the kingdom of the Saviour.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-43Verses 36-43 Many are full of good words, who are empty and barren in good works; but Tabitha was a great doer, no great talker. Christians who have not property to give in charity, may yet be able to do acts of charity, working with their hands, or walking with their feet, for the good of others. Those are certainly best praised whose own works praise them, whether the words of others do so or not. But such are ungrateful indeed, who have kindness shown…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-43These verses describe Peter’s traveling ministry in Judea, especially in towns along the seacoast. As he traveled, God gave him power to do miracles. Peter healed a man named Aeneas and raised a woman named Dorcas from the dead. Jesus had promised that his disciples would do such works (John 14:12). Luke often tells stories in pairs. For example, he tells of a man being healed and then a woman being healed (see Luke 13:10–17; 14:1–6). In this passage…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 40-4340-43. Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down--the one in imitation of his Master's way (Lu 8:54; and compare 2Ki 4:33); the other, in striking contrast with it. The kneeling became the lowly servant, but not the Lord Himself, of whom it is never once recorded that he knelt in the performance of a miracle. opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up--The graphic minuteness of detail here imparts to the narrative an air of charming reality.Read the comment
