God’s Word Translation
1 Corinthians 9:10
10Isn’t he speaking entirely for our benefit? This was written for our benefit so that the person who plows or threshes should expect to receive a share of the crop.
1 Corinthians 9:10 in other versions
- King James Version (KJV)Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
- New International Version (NIV)Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.
- English Standard Version (ESV)Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.
- New King James Version (NKJV)Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.
Context of 1 Corinthians 9:10
8Am I merely stating some human rule? Don’t Moses’ Teachings say the same thing? 9Moses’ Teachings say, “Never muzzle an ox when it is threshing grain.” God’s concern isn’t for oxen. Isn’t he speaking entirely for our benefit? This was written for our benefit so that the person who plows or threshes should expect to receive a share of the crop. 11If we have planted the spiritual seed that has been of benefit to you, is it too much if we receive part of the harvest from your earthly goods? 12If others have the right to expect this from you, don’t we deserve even more? But we haven’t used our rights. Instead, we would put up with anything in order not to hinder the Good News of Christ in any way.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10And he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope - Instead of ̔ , ' , many of the best MSS. and versions read the passage thus: ̔ ' · And he who thresheth in hope of partaking. "The words , which are omitted by the above, are," says Bp. Pearce, "superfluous, if not wrong; for men do not live in hope to partake of their hope, but to partake of what was the object and end of their hope. When these words are left out, the former and latter…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? - The word “altogether” ( ́ pantōs) cannot mean that this was the “sole” and “only” design of the law, to teach that ministers of the gospel were entitled to support; for: (1) This would be directly contrary to the law itself, which had some direct and undoubted reference to oxen; (2) The scope of the argument here does not require this interpretation, since the whole object will be met by supposing that this…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. altogether--Join this with "saith." "Does he (the divine lawgiver) by all means say it for our sakes?" It would be untrue, that God saith it altogether (in the sense of solely) for our sakes. But it is true, that He by all means saith it for our sakes as the ultimate object in the lower world. Grotius, however, translates, "mainly" or "especially," instead of altogether. that--"meaning that" [Alford]; literally, "because." should plough--ought to…Read the comment
