1 Corinthians 9:10
10Isn’t he really saying it for our sake? Yes, this is written for our sake, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes should thresh in hope of sharing the crop.
1 Corinthians 9:10 in other versions
- King James Version (KJV)Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
- New International Version (NIV)Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.
- English Standard Version (ESV)Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.
- New King James Version (NKJV)Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.
Context of 1 Corinthians 9:10
8Am I saying this from a human perspective? Doesn’t the law also say the same thing? 9For it is written in the law of Moses, Do not muzzle an ox while it treads out grain. Is God really concerned about oxen? Isn’t he really saying it for our sake? Yes, this is written for our sake, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes should thresh in hope of sharing the crop. 11If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it too much if we reap material benefits from you? 12If others have this right to receive benefits from you, don’t we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right; instead, we endure everything so that we will not hinder the gospel of Christ.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10And he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope - Instead of ̔ , ' , many of the best MSS. and versions read the passage thus: ̔ ' · And he who thresheth in hope of partaking. "The words , which are omitted by the above, are," says Bp. Pearce, "superfluous, if not wrong; for men do not live in hope to partake of their hope, but to partake of what was the object and end of their hope. When these words are left out, the former and latter…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? - The word “altogether” ( ́ pantōs) cannot mean that this was the “sole” and “only” design of the law, to teach that ministers of the gospel were entitled to support; for: (1) This would be directly contrary to the law itself, which had some direct and undoubted reference to oxen; (2) The scope of the argument here does not require this interpretation, since the whole object will be met by supposing that this…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. altogether--Join this with "saith." "Does he (the divine lawgiver) by all means say it for our sakes?" It would be untrue, that God saith it altogether (in the sense of solely) for our sakes. But it is true, that He by all means saith it for our sakes as the ultimate object in the lower world. Grotius, however, translates, "mainly" or "especially," instead of altogether. that--"meaning that" [Alford]; literally, "because." should plough--ought to…Read the comment
