Context of 1 Corinthians 5:7
5hand such a person over to Satan to destroy his corrupt nature so that his spiritual nature may be saved on the day of the Lord. 6It’s not good for you to brag. Don’t you know that a little yeast spreads through the whole batch of dough? Remove the old yeast ⌞of sin⌟ so that you may be a new batch of dough, since you don’t actually have the yeast ⌞of sin⌟. Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8So we must not celebrate our festival with the old yeast ⌞of sin⌟ or with the yeast of vice and wickedness. Instead, we must celebrate it with the bread of purity and truth that has no yeast. 9In my letter to you I told you not to associate with people who continue to commit sexual sins.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 5:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Purge out therefore the old leaven - As it is the custom of the Jews previously to the passover to search their houses in the most diligent manner for the old leaven, and throw it out, sweeping every part clean; so act with this incestuous person. I have already shown with what care the Jews purged their houses from all leaven previously to the passover; see the note on Exodus 12:8-19; (note), and on the term passover, and Christ as represented by this…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Purge out therefore - Put away; free yourselves from. The old leaven - The apostle here takes occasion, from the mention of leaven, to exhort the Corinthians to put away vice and sin. The figure is derived from the custom of the Jews in putting away leaven at the celebration of the passover. By the OLD leaven he means vice and sin; and also here the person who had committed the sin in their church. As the Jews, at the celebration of the passover, gave…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8Paul compares the Jewish Passover celebration to Christ's sacrifice. During Passover, people sacrificed a lamb and ate unleavened bread (see Exodus 12:1–27; 13:3–7). Christ's sacrifice, which happened at Passover (Matthew 26:2; compare John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:19), removes sin for believers.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. old leaven--The remnant of the "old" (Ep 4:22-24) heathenish and natural corruption. The image is taken from the extreme care of the Jews in searching every corner of their houses, and "purging out" every particle of leaven from the time of killing the lamb before the Passover (De 16:3, 4). So Christians are continually to search and purify their hearts (Psa 139:23, 24). as ye are unleavened--normally, and as far as your Christian calling is concerned…Read the comment
