Context of Exodus 12:15
13But the blood on your houses will be a sign for your protection. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. Nothing will touch or destroy you when I strike Egypt. 14“This day will be one for you to remember. This is a permanent law for generations to come: You will celebrate this day as a pilgrimage festival in the Lord’s honor. For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the very first day you must remove any yeast that you have in your houses. Whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh day must be excluded from Israel. 16You must have a holy assembly on the first day and another one on the seventh. You must not work on these days except to prepare your own meals. That’s all you may do. 17You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread because it was on this very day that I brought you out of Egypt in organized family groups. This is a permanent law for future generations: You must celebrate this day.

Commentaries on Exodus 12:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread - This has been considered as a distinct ordinance, and not essentially connected with the passover. The passover was to be observed on the fourteenth day of the first month; the feast of unleavened bread began on the fifteenth and lasted seven days, the first and last of which were holy convocations. That soul shall be cut off - There are thirty-six places in which this excision or cutting off is threatened…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Cut off - The penalty inflicted on those who transgressed the command may be accounted for on the ground that it was an act of rebellion; but additional light is thrown upon it by the typical meaning assigned to leaven by our Lord, Matthew 16:6.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15unleavened: The Israelites needed unleavened bread (which was made without yeast) when they left Egypt in a hurry (see 12:34, 39). The Feast of Unleavened Bread remembers that event. Later in the Bible, yeast became a symbol of sin. Yeast spreads through dough, and in the same way sin spreads through people and communities. Jesus warned his disciples, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” (Matthew 16:6). He was speaking about their teaching and…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 15-5115. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread, &c.--This was to commemorate another circumstance in the departure of the Israelites, who were urged to leave so hurriedly that their dough was unleavened (Ex 12:39), and they had to eat unleavened cakes (De 16:3). The greatest care was always taken by the Jews to free their houses from leaven--the owner searching every corner of his dwelling with a lighted candle. A figurative allusion to this is made (1Co…Read the comment
