Context of Matthew 27:25
23So Pilate said, ‘Why should I kill him? What bad things has he done?’ But the people shouted even louder, ‘Kill him on a cross!’ 24Then Pilate knew that he could not do anything to make them quiet. He thought that the people would start to fight his soldiers. So he took a dish of water and he washed his hands in front of the people. He said, ‘It is not because of me that this man will die. You are the people who have caused it to happen.’ All the people answered Pilate, ‘Yes, God should punish us and our children, if we have done the wrong thing.’ 26Then Pilate let Barabbas go free, as the crowd wanted. But he said to his soldiers, ‘Hit Jesus many times with a whip. Then take him and fix him to a cross to die.’ 27Then Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the yard of the ruler's house. All the other soldiers in their group were there.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25His blood be on us and on our children - If this man be innocent, and we put him to death as a guilty person, may the punishment due to such a crime be visited upon us, and upon our children after us! What a dreadful imprecation! and how literally fulfilled! The notes on chap. 24, will show how they fell victims to their own imprecation, being visited with a series of calamities unexampled in the history of the world. They were visited with the same kind…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25His blood be on us - That is, let the guilt of putting him to death, if there be any, be on us and our children. We will be answerable for it, and will consent to bear the punishment for it. It is remarked by writers that, among the Athenians, if anyone accused another of a capital crime, he devoted himself and children to the same punishment if the accused was afterward found innocent. So in all countries the conduct of the parent involves the children…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-25Verses 11-25 Having no malice against Jesus, Pilate urged him to clear himself, and laboured to get him discharged. The message from his wife was a warning. God has many ways of giving checks to sinners, in their sinful pursuits, and it is a great mercy to have such checks from Providence, from faithful friends, and from our own consciences. O do not this abominable thing which the Lord hates! is what we may hear said to us, when we are entering into…Read the comment

They represented all of Israel who disbelieved Jesus. Their actions led to consequences for the entire nation, like the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. His blood be on us and on our children! (see 23:35; 2 Samuel 1:16; 14:9; Jeremiah 51:35; Acts 5:28; 18:6; 20:26): Some Christians have misunderstood and misused…Read the comment
