Context of Matthew 26:56
54They would save me. But then the things that God has said in the Bible about this would not happen. So it must happen in this way.’ 55At that time, Jesus said to the crowd, ‘You have come out here with swords and heavy sticks to take hold of me. Do you really believe that I am leading people to fight against our country's rulers? No! I was teaching people every day in the yard of the temple. But you did not try to take hold of me then. The prophets wrote long ago that all this would happen to me. Now it has become true.’ Then all of Jesus' disciples ran away and left him. 57Then those men who had taken hold of Jesus took him to Caiaphas's house. Caiaphas was the most important priest. The teachers of God's Law and the important Jews were meeting there together with Caiaphas. 58Peter followed Jesus into the yard of Caiaphas' house. But he did not go near Jesus. He sat down in the yard with the police who worked in the temple. He wanted to see what would happen.

Commentaries on Matthew 26:56
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 56But all this was done - This is probably the observation of the evangelist. See on Matthew 2:23; (note). Then all the disciples forsook him and fled - O what is man! How little is even his utmost sincerity to be depended on! Jesus is abandoned by all! - even zealous Peter and loving John are among the fugitives! Was ever master so served by his scholars? Was ever parent so treated by his children? Is there not as much zeal and love among them all as might…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-57Verses 47-57 The account of Jesus‘ being betrayed by Judas is recorded by all the evangelists. See Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:2-12. Matthew 26:47 Judas, one of the twelve, came - This was done while Jesus was addressing his disciples. John informs us that Judas knew the place, because Jesus was in the habit of going there with his disciples. Judas had passed the time, after he left Jesus and the other disciples at the Passover, in arranging…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-56Verses 47-56 No enemies are so much to be abhorred as those professed disciples that betray Christ with a kiss. God has no need of our services, much less of our sins, to bring about his purposes. Though Christ was crucified through weakness, it was voluntary weakness; he submitted to death. If he had not been willing to suffer, they could not conquer him. It was a great sin for those who had left all to follow Jesus; now to leave him for they knew not…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 56We do not know which of the Scriptures Jesus was referring to. It might have been Isaiah 53 or the general Old Testament theme of a suffering Messiah. As Jesus had predicted earlier that evening, all the disciples adandoned him (Matthew 26:31–35).Read the comment
