Context of Mark 12:44
42But then a woman came there. Her husband had died and she was very poor. She put two small coins that had only a little value into the box. 43Jesus asked his disciples to come to him. He said to them, ‘I tell you this: This poor woman has put a better gift into the box than all the other people have put in there. All those rich people have plenty of money. They only put a small part of that into the box. But this woman has almost nothing. She put in all the money that she had. That was all the money that she needed to live.’

Commentaries on Mark 12:44
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44Of their abundance - Of their superfluous store. They have given what they did not “need.” They could afford it as well as not, and in doing it they have shown no self-denial. She of her want - Of her poverty. All her living - All that she had to live on. She trusted in God to supply her wants, and devoted her little property entirely to him. From this passage we may learn: 1. That God is pleased with offerings made to him and his cause. 2. That it is our…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 41-44Verses 41-44 Let us not forget that Jesus still sees the treasury. He knows how much, and from what motives, men give to his cause. He looks at the heart, and what our views are, in giving alms; and whether we do it as unto the Lord, or only to be seen of men. It is so rare to find any who would not blame this widow, that we cannot expect to find many who will do like to her; and yet our Saviour commends her, therefore we are sure that she did well and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 43-44Jesus called his disciples to hear his teaching (see 3:23; 6:7; 8:1; 10:42; see also 7:14; 8:34). In 12:43, Jesus showed a big difference between his thinking and that of the world. The widow was doing exactly what Jesus told the rich young ruler to do (Mark 10:21) and what he taught his disciples (1:18…Read the comment
