Context of Mark 12:31
29Jesus replied, ‘This rule is the most important rule: “Listen, Israel's people! The Lord alone is our God. There is no other Lord. 30Love the Lord, your God completely. Love him with all your mind and with all your strength. Love him in everything that you think and you do.” The second most important rule is this: “You should love other people as much as you love yourself.” No other rules are as important as these two.’ 32The teacher of God's Law said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, you have answered well. You are right to say that the Lord is the only God. And there is no other God except him. 33We must love him completely, with all our mind and with all our strength. We must also love other people as much as we love ourselves. This is more important than all the gifts or animals that we could offer to God.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28-34Verses 28-34 See the notes at Matthew 22:34-40. Mark 12:28 Perceiving that he answered them well - That is, with wisdom, and with a proper understanding of the law. In this case the opinion of the Saviour corresponded with that of the Pharisees; and the question which this scribe put to him now seems to have been one of the very few candid inquiries of him by the Jews for the purpose of obtaining information. Jesus answered it in the spirit of kindness…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-34Verses 28-34 Those who sincerely desire to be taught their duty, Christ will guide in judgment, and teach his way. He tells the scribe that the great commandment, which indeed includes all, is, that of loving God with all our hearts. Wherever this is the ruling principle in the soul, there is a disposition to every other duty. Loving God with all our heart, will engage us to every thing by which he will be pleased. The sacrifices only represented the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-31Jesus answered by joining two commands from different parts of the Torah. The first, Deuteronomy 6:4–5, was likely the most well-known passage in the Old Testament. Faithful Jews repeated it twice each day. It is called the Shema because it starts with the word Listen (Hebrew shema‘). This command matches the first part of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2–11), which focuses on a person’s relationship with God. God’s oneness is central to Jewish and…Read the comment

Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself--Now, as we are not to love ourselves supremely, this is virtually a command, in…Read the comment
