Context of Luke 24:27
25Jesus then said to them, ‘How silly you are! You are very slow to believe everything that God's prophets said long ago. 26You should have known that the Messiah had to die. Only then would he return to heaven and show how great and powerful he is.’ Jesus then began to explain to them what Moses and all God's prophets had taught. He showed them what they wrote in the Bible about himself. 28Then they came near to the village that the disciples were going to. It seemed that Jesus would continue his journey. 29But they wanted him to stop there. They said to him, ‘Please stay in our home with us. It is getting late, and it will soon be night.’ So Jesus went into their house to stay with them.

Commentaries on Luke 24:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27Beginning at Moses, etc. - What a sermon this must have been, where all the prophecies relative to the incarnation, birth, teaching, miracles, sufferings, death, and resurrection of the blessed Jesus were all adduced, illustrated, and applied to himself, by an appeal to the well known facts which had taken place during his life! We are almost irresistibly impelled to exclaim, What a pity this discourse had not been preserved! No wonder their hearts burned…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27Beginning at Moses - At the “writings” of Moses, or at the beginning of the Old Testament; or rather the word “beginning” should be separated from what follows, denoting simply that he “commenced” his discourse, and not that he began at the prophets as well as at Moses; thus, “And commencing his discourse, or replying to them, he expounded from Moses and the prophets,” etc. All the prophets - The books of the Old Testament generally. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-27Verses 13-27 This appearance of Jesus to the two disciples going to Emmaus, happened the same day that he rose from the dead. It well becomes the disciples of Christ to talk together of his death and resurrection; thus they may improve one another's knowledge, refresh one another's memory, and stir up each other's devout affections. And where but two together are well employed in work of that kind, he will come to them, and make a third. Those who seek…Read the comment
