Context of Luke 24:28
26You should have known that the Messiah had to die. Only then would he return to heaven and show how great and powerful he is.’ 27Jesus then began to explain to them what Moses and all God's prophets had taught. He showed them what they wrote in the Bible about himself. Then they came near to the village that the disciples were going to. It seemed that Jesus would continue his journey. 29But they wanted him to stop there. They said to him, ‘Please stay in our home with us. It is getting late, and it will soon be night.’ So Jesus went into their house to stay with them. 30He sat down to eat with them. He took the bread and he thanked God for it. He broke it into pieces and he gave some to them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28He made as though he would have gone farther - That is, he was going on, as though he intended to go farther; and so he doubtless would had they not earnestly pressed him to lodge with them. His preaching had made a deep impression upon their hearts, Luke 24:32, and now they feel it their greatest privilege to entertain the preacher. This is a constant effect of the doctrine of Christ: wherever it is felt, the Author of it, the ever-blessed Jesus, is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28He made as though he would have gone further - He did not “say” he would go farther, but he kept on as if it was not his intention to stop, and doubtless he “would” have gone on if they had not constrained him to tarry.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-35Verses 28-35 If we would have Christ dwell with us, we must be earnest with him. Those that have experienced the pleasure and profit of communion with him, cannot but desire more of his company. He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. This he did with his usual authority and affection, with the same manner, perhaps with the same words. He here teaches us to crave a blessing on every meal. See how Christ by his Spirit and grace makes…Read the comment
