12I will tell you how you will know this baby. You will find him with cloths around him. He is lying in an animal's food box.’ 13At that moment, a great crowd of angels appeared. They were praising God. They said: ‘God is great! He lives in the highest place above. He will bless the people on earth who please him. They will have peace in their minds.’ 15After that, the angels went away and returned to heaven. Then the shepherds said to each other, ‘We should leave the sheep and go to Bethlehem immediately! The Lord God has sent his angels to tell us what has happened. We want to see this baby.’ 16So they went quickly to Bethlehem. When they got there, they found Mary and Joseph with the baby. The baby really was lying in a food box.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Glory to God in the highest - The design of God, in the incarnation, was to manifest the hidden glories of his nature, and to reconcile men to each other and to himself. The angels therefore declare that this incarnation shall manifest and promote the glory of God, ̔ not only in the highest heavens, among the highest orders of beings, but in the highest and most exalted degrees. For in this astonishing display of God's mercy, attributes of the Divine…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Glory to God - Praise be to God, or honor be to God. That is, the praise of redeeming man is due to God. The plan of redemption will bring glory to God, and is designed to express his glory. This it does by evincing his love to people, his mercy, his condescension, and his regard to the honor of his law and the stability of his own government. It is the highest expression of his love and mercy. Nowhere, so far as we can see, could his glory be more…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-20Verses 8-20 Angels were heralds of the new-born Saviour, but they were only sent to some poor, humble, pious, industrious shepherds, who were in the business of their calling, keeping watch over their flock. We are not out of the way of Divine visits, when we are employed in an honest calling, and abide with God in it. Let God have the honour of this work; Glory to God in the highest. God's good-will to men, manifested in sending the Messiah, redounds to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Glory to God in the highest: This short hymn is known as the Gloria in excelsis Deo from the Latin translation of the first line. The Messiah’s coming brings glory to God in the heavens and peace to humans on earth. peace to men on whom His favor rests: Peace means "complete well-being," not just the absence of hostility. The traditional translation, “on earth peace, good will toward men” in the King James Version, is based on the reading of some late…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. Glory, &c.--brief but transporting hymn--not only in articulate human speech, for our benefit, but in tunable measure, in the form of a Hebrew parallelism of two complete clauses, and a third one only amplifying the second, and so without a connecting "and." The "glory to God," which the new-born "Saviour" was to bring, is the first note of this sublime hymn: to this answers, in the second clause, the "peace on earth," of which He was to be "the…Read the comment
