Context of John 17:4
2You gave me authority over all people. You did this so that I could give people life for ever. Those are the people that you gave to me. 3What does it mean for people to live with you for ever? It means that they know you, the one who is the only true God. They also know me, Jesus Christ, the one that you have sent. I have shown people here on the earth how great you are. In that way, I have finished the work that you gave to me to do. 5So, Father, now that I return to you, show people how great I am. Before the world began, I had great glory with you. Show again that I am great like that.’ 6‘You gave some people to me who were from this world. I have shown them who you are. They were yours and you gave them to me. They have obeyed your message.

Commentaries on John 17:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4I have glorified thee - Our Lord, considering himself as already sacrificed for the sin of the world, speaks of having completed the work which God had given him to do: and he looks forward to that time when, through the preaching of his Gospel, his sacrifice should be acknowledged, and the true God should be known and worshipped by the whole world.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Have glorified thee - In my instructions and life. See his discourses everywhere, the whole tendency of which is to put honor on God. I have finished the work - Compare John 19:30. When he says “I have finished,” he probably means to include also his death. All the preparations for that death were made. He had preached to the Jews; he had given them full proof that he was the Messiah; he had collected his disciples; he had taught them the nature of his…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4-54-5. I have glorified thee on the earth--rather, "I glorified" (for the thing is conceived as now past). I have finished--I finished. the work which thou gavest me to do--It is very important to preserve in the translation the past tense, used in the original, otherwise it might be thought that the work already "finished" was only what He had done before uttering that prayer; whereas it will be observed that our Lord speaks throughout as already beyond…Read the comment
