Context of Luke 1:69
67The Holy Spirit filled John's father, Zechariah, so that he spoke God's message: 68‘The Lord God of Israel is a great God. He has come to save his people. He has come to make them free. He has sent a very strong person who will save us. This person comes from the family of his servant, King David. 70Long ago, God promised that he would do this. He gave his own prophets this message to speak. 71God will save us from our enemies. He will save us from everyone that hates us.

Commentaries on Luke 1:69
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 69And hath raised up a horn of salvation - That is, a mighty and glorious Savior: a quotation from Psalm 18:2. Horns are the well known emblems of strength, glory, and power, both in the sacred and profane writers, because the strength and beauty of horned animals consist in their horns. Horns have also been considered as emblems of light; therefore the heathen god Apollo is represented with horns, to point out the power, glory, and excellence of the solar…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 69And hath raised up a horn - A horn is a symbol of strength. The figure is taken from the fact that in horned animals the strength lies in the “horn.” Particularly, the great power of the rhinoceros or unicorn is manifested by the use of a single horn of great “strength,” placed on the head near the end of the nose. When the sacred writers, therefore, speak of great strength they often use the word “horn,” Psalm 148:14; Deuteronomy 33:17; Daniel 7:7-8…Read the comment

The gospel is discovering; it shows that about which we were utterly in the dark; it is to give light to those that sit in darkness, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. It is reviving; it…Read the comment
