Context of Luke 1:71
69He has sent a very strong person who will save us. This person comes from the family of his servant, King David. 70Long ago, God promised that he would do this. He gave his own prophets this message to speak. God will save us from our enemies. He will save us from everyone that hates us. 72He has promised to be kind to our ancestors. He will do the things that he promised in his holy covenant. 73Yes, he will remember the strong promises that he spoke to Abraham.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 71That we should be saved (literally, a salvation) from our enemies - As Zacharias spoke by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the salvation which he mentions here must necessarily be understood in a spiritual sense. Satan, death, and sin are the enemies from whom Jesus came to deliver us. Sin is the most dangerous of all, and is properly the only enemy we have to fear. Satan is without us, and can have no power over us, but what he gets through sin. Death…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 71Saved from our enemies - The enemies of “man” are his sins, his carnal propensities, his lusts, and the great adversary Satan and his angels, who continually seek to destroy him. From “these” the Messiah came to save us. Compare Genesis 3:15; Matthew 1:21. The hand - The power; or to save us from them.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 67-80Verses 67-80 Zacharias uttered a prophecy concerning the kingdom and salvation of the Messiah. The gospel brings light with it; in it the day dawns. In John the Baptist it began to break, and increased apace to the perfect day. The gospel is discovering; it shows that about which we were utterly in the dark; it is to give light to those that sit in darkness, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Lord God of Israel--the ancient covenant God of the peculiar people. visited and redeemed--that is, in order to redeem: returned after long absence, and broken His long silence (see Mt 15:31).
