Context of Luke 1:68
66Everyone who heard about these things thought about them. They asked each other, ‘When this child becomes a man, what will he be?’ They could see that God really was with him. 67The Holy Spirit filled John's father, Zechariah, so that he spoke God's message: ‘The Lord God of Israel is a great God. He has come to save his people. He has come to make them free. 69He has sent a very strong person who will save us. This person comes from the family of his servant, King David. 70Long ago, God promised that he would do this. He gave his own prophets this message to speak.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for, etc. - Zacharias praises God for two grand benefits which he had granted to his people. 1. He has visited them. 2. He has ransomed them. He speaks by the spirit of prophecy, which calls things that are not, as though they were; because they are absolutely determined by the Most High, and shall be all fulfilled in their season. God visits his people in the incarnation of Jesus Christ; therefore this Christ is called…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 68Blessed - See the notes at Matthew 5:3. Hath visited - The word here rendered “visited” means properly “to look upon;” then to look upon in order “to know the state of anyone;” then to visit for the purpose of “aiding those who need aid,” or alleviating misery. Compare Matthew 25:43. In this sense it is used here. God “looked upon” the world - he saw it miserable - he came to relieve it, and brought salvation. And redeemed - That is, was “about to…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 67-80Verses 67-80 Zacharias uttered a prophecy concerning the kingdom and salvation of the Messiah. The gospel brings light with it; in it the day dawns. It is reviving; it…Read the comment
