Context of John 16:24
22It is like that for you. You are sad now. But I will see you again, and then you will be happy. You will be really happy. Nobody will be able to take away your joy. 23When that day arrives, you will not ask me for anything. I tell you this: The Father will help you with anything that you ask him for in my name. Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask God, and you will receive what you ask for. Then you will be completely happy. 25I have spoken to you with words and stories that are like pictures. But there will be a time when I will not speak like that any more. Instead, I will speak clearly to you about the Father. 26When that day arrives, you yourselves will ask the Father in my name. I do not say that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name - Ye have not as yet considered me the great Mediator between God and man; but this is one of the truths which shall be more fully revealed to you by the Holy Spirit. Ask - In my name; and ye shall receive - all the salvation ye thus request; the consequence of which shall be that your joy shall be full - ye shall be thoroughly happy in being made completely holy.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24Hitherto - During his ministry, and while he was with them. Have ye asked - From the evangelists, as well as from this declaration, it seems that they had presented their requests for instruction and aid to Jesus himself. If they had prayed to God, it is probable that they had not done it in his name This great truth that we must approach God in the name of the Mediator was reserved for the last that the Saviour was to communicate to them. It was to be…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 Asking of the Father shows a sense of spiritual wants, and a desire of spiritual blessings, with conviction that they are to be had from God only. Asking in Christ's name, is acknowledging our unworthiness to receive any favours from God, and shows full dependence upon Christ as the Lord our Righteousness.
