Context of Matthew 6:9
7When you pray, do not say the same words many times. People who do not believe in God do that. They use many words that mean nothing. They think that when they pray like that, their gods will hear them. 8Do not pray like they do. God your Father already knows what you need. He knows this even before you ask him. So this is how you should pray: “God, our Father who is in heaven, we want people to give honour to you. 10We want the day when you rule everyone to come soon. We want everyone to obey you on earth, like everyone in heaven obeys you. 11Please give us the food that we need today.

Commentaries on Matthew 6:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9After this manner therefore pray ye - Forms of prayer were frequent among the Jews; and every public teacher gave one to his disciples. Some forms were drawn out to a considerable length, and from these abridgments were made: to the latter sort the following prayer properly belongs, and consequently, besides its own very important use, it is a plan for a more extended devotion. What satisfaction must it be to learn from God himself, with what words, and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 This passage contains the Lord‘s prayer, a composition unequalled for comprehensiveness and for beauty. It is supposed that some of these petitions were taken from those in common use among the Jews. Indeed some of them are still to be found in Jewish writings, but they did not exist in this beautiful combination. This prayer is given as a “model.” It is designed to express the “manner” in which we are to pray, evidently not the precise words…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 Christ saw it needful to show his disciples what must commonly be the matter and method of their prayer. Not that we are tied up to the use of this only, or of this always; yet, without doubt, it is very good to use it. It has much in a little; and it is used acceptably no further than it is used with understanding, and without being needlessly repeated. The petitions are six; the first three relate more expressly to God and his honour, the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9This is how you should pray: This introduces what is often called the Lord’s Prayer. Unlike the long and repeated prayers of pagan worshipers (6:7–8). Most Jewish prayers did not call God “Father.” But Jesus did so in nearly every prayer. The only exception is his cry on the cross (Mark 15:34). hallowed be Your name: This means that God’s name should be honored. In the Old Testament, God’s name was dishonored when his people sinned (Isaiah 29:22–24…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. After this manner--more simply "Thus." therefore pray ye--The "ye" is emphatic here, in contrast with the heathen prayers. That this matchless prayer was given not only as a model, but as a form, might be concluded from its very nature. Did it consist only of hints or directions for prayer, it could only be used as a directory; but seeing it is an actual prayer--designed, indeed, to show how much real prayer could be compressed into the fewest words…Read the comment
