Context of Hebrews 5:7
5It is the same with Christ. He did not choose himself to be God's special priest. He did not choose to make himself important like that. God chose him. God showed that Christ was very important. God said to him: ‘You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.’ 6And in another place in the Bible God says this: ‘You will be a priest for ever, in the same way that Melchizedek was a priest long ago.’ When Jesus Christ lived on earth as a man, he often prayed to God. He asked God to help him. He prayed strongly and he cried loudly with many tears. He knew that God could save him from death. And God listened to Jesus when he prayed, because Jesus served God. 8Jesus is God's Son. But he still had trouble and pain. In that way, he learned to obey God completely. 9As a result, Jesus became the person who can save everyone who obeys him. Because of Jesus, God forgives their sins for ever.

Cross-references for Hebrews 5:7
- Hebrews 2:14So, those people who become God's children are human. They have human bodies. Because of that, Jesus himself became human like us. In that way, when he died he was able to destroy the Devil. It is the Devil who has power over death.

- Romans 8:3The Law that God gave to Moses could not make us free like that. We were too weak to obey his Law because we are human. But God has done what his Law could not do. He sent his own Son to become a person like us. His human body was like the body of people who do wrong things. God's Son died as a sacrifice to take away the punishment for our sins. In that way, God destroyed the power of sin over people who are weak and human.

- 1 Timothy 3:16Yes, the message that God has shown us about Jesus Christ is very great. We all agree to this: God showed him to us as a man. God's Spirit showed that he always did what was right. Angels saw him. People taught his message in many countries of the world. People in the world believed in him. God took him up to be with himself in heaven.
- 1 John 4:3But if someone does not agree to say that about Jesus, he does not have God's Spirit. That person has a spirit that comes from the enemy of Christ. You have heard that this enemy of Christ would come among us. Now this spirit is already here in the world.
- 2 John 1:7I say this because many false teachers are travelling around everywhere. They do not agree that Jesus Christ was born as a human baby. People like that are telling lies. They are enemies of Christ.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Who in the days of his flesh - The time of his incarnation, during which he took all the infirmities of human nature upon him, and was afflicted in his body and human soul just as other men are, irregular and sinful passions excepted. Offered up prayers and supplications - This is one of the most difficult places in this epistle, if not in the whole of the New Testament. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Who - That is, the Lord Jesus - for so the connection demands. The object of this verse and the two following is, to show that the Lord Jesus had that qualification for the office of priest to which he had referred in Hebrews 5:2. It was one important qualification for that office that he who sustained it should be able to show compassion, to aid those that were out of the way, and to sympathize with sufferers; in other words, they were themselves…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7The phrase with loud cries and tears likely refers to the suffering Jesus experienced in the garden of Gethsemane (see Matthew 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42; Luke 22:40–46). God heard his prayers by affirming his righteousness and his role as high priest. Jesus showed faithful devotion to God. His example encourages the readers to remain faithful as well (compare Hebrews 12:2–3).Read the comment
