Context of Hebrews 1:9
7God speaks about the angels like this: ‘God makes his angels like winds. They serve him like fires that burn brightly.’ 8But this is what God says to his Son: ‘You are God and you will rule as King for ever! You will rule your kingdom in a completely good way. You love everything that is right. And you hate everything that is wrong. Because of that, you will be completely happy. I am your God and I have blessed you. I have chosen you to be greater than others who are with you.’ 10The Bible also says this: ‘Lord, in the beginning you made the earth. With your own power, you also made everything above the earth. 11All these things will come to an end. But as for you, you will continue for ever. Like clothes, those things will all become old.

Commentaries on Hebrews 1:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Thou hast loved righteousness - This is the characteristic of a just governor: he abhors and suppresses iniquity; he countenances and supports righteousness and truth. Therefore God, even thy God - The original, ̔ , ̔ , may be thus translated: Therefore, O God, thy God hath anointed thee. The form of speech is nearly the same with that in the preceding verse; but the sense is sufficiently clear if we read, Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee, etc…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Thou hast loved righteousness - Thou hast been obedient to the Law of God, or holy and upright. Nothing can be more truly adapted to express the character of anyone than this is to describe the Lord Jesus, who was “holy, harmless, undefiled,” who “did no sin, and in whose mouth no guile was found;” but it is with difficulty that this can be applied to Solomon. Assuredly, for a considerable part of his life, this declaration could not well be appropriate…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-14Verses 4-14 Many Jews had a superstitious or idolatrous respect for angels, because they had received the law and other tidings of the Divine will by their ministry. They looked upon them as mediators between God and men, and some went so far as to pay them a kind of religious homage or worship. Thus it was necessary that the apostle should insist, not only on Christ's being the Creator of all things, and therefore of angels themselves, but as being the…Read the comment

In Hebrews 1:9, "your God" refers to God the Father. has anointed you … with the oil of joy: Olive oil was used to anoint Israel's kings when they began their rule (1 Samuel 10:1; 1 Kings 19:15–16). To anoint someone was to pour oil on that person’s head as a public sign that God had chosen them…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. iniquity--"unnrighteousness." Some oldest manuscripts read, "lawlessness." therefore--because God loves righteousness and hates iniquity. God ... thy God--Jerome, Augustine, and others translate Psa 45:7, "O God, Thy God, hath anointed thee," whereby Christ is addressed as God. This is probably the true translation of the Hebrew there, and also of the Greek of Hebrews here; for it is likely the Son is addressed, "O God," as in He 1:8. The anointing…Read the comment
