Context of Revelation 2:6
4But I have something to say against you. You loved me very much when you first believed in me. You do not love me as much now. 5Think carefully about this! You do not now live in the way you did at the beginning. So you must change the way you live. Do again the good things that you did at the beginning. If you do not change the way you live, I will come to punish you. I will take away your lampstand from its place. But this is something that you do well: you hate the bad things that the Nicolaitans are doing. I also hate what they do. 7God's Spirit is now speaking to people in the churches. You should recognize that the Spirit is speaking. Everyone who knows that should listen to what he says. I will let everyone who wins against Satan eat my fruit. This fruit is from the tree that makes us alive. And this tree grows in God's garden.” ’ 8‘Write this to the angel of the church at Smyrna: “This is the message to you from the one who is the first and the last. He was dead, but he became alive again.

Commentaries on Revelation 2:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6The deeds of the Nicolaitanes - These were, as is commonly supposed, a sect of the Gnostics, who taught the most impure doctrines, and followed the most impure practices. They are also supposed to have derived their origin from Nicolas, one of the seven deacons mentioned Acts 6:5; (note). The Nicolaitanes taught the community of wives, that adultery and fornication were things indifferent, that eating meats offered to idols was quite lawful; and mixed…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6But this thou hast - This thou hast that I approve of, or that I can commend. That thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans - Greek, “works” ( ̀ ̓́ ta erga). The word “Nicolaitanes” occurs only in this place, and in the Revelation 2:15 verse of this chapter. From the reference in the latter place it is clear that the doctrines which they held prevailed at Pergamos as well as at Ephesus; but from neither place can anything now be inferred in regard to the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Little is known about the Nicolaitans. Their teachings (Revelation 2:15) suggest they ate food offered to idols and engaged in sexual immorality. The council in Jerusalem prohibited this behavior (see Acts 15:20, 29). The early church father Irenaeus, writing around AD 180, said that the Nicolaitans followed the teaching of Nicolas (Acts 6:3–5). He believed John's writings opposed the Nicolaitan false teachings linked to Cerinthus (see 1 John Book…Read the comment
