Context of Acts 5:20
18These important men took hold of the apostles and they put them in the city's prison. 19But during the night, one of the Lord God's angels came and he opened the prison gates. He led the apostles out of the prison. The angel said to them, ‘Go and stand in the yard of the temple. Tell the people everything about this new life that God gives.’ 21The apostles did what the angel told them to do. At dawn they went into the yard of the temple. They began to teach the people there. Then the most important priest and his friends arrived. They told the group of Jewish leaders to meet with them. All the most important people in Israel were in that group. Then they sent their police to the prison to bring the apostles to the meeting place. 22But when the police arrived at the prison, they did not find the apostles there. So the police returned to the Jewish leaders and they told them the news.

Commentaries on Acts 5:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20All the words of this life - All the doctrines of life eternal, founded on the word, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. This is another periphrasis for Gospel. Go to the temple - the most public place, and speak to the people - who come there to worship according to the law, the words of this life - the whole doctrine of salvation from sin and death; and show that the law is fulfilled in the sacrifice of Jesus, and that, by his resurrection, he has…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20In the temple - In a public and conspicuous place. In this way there would be a most striking exhibition of their boldness; a proof that “God” had delivered them, and a manifestation of their purpose to obey God rather than man. All the words - All the doctrines. Compare John 6:68, “Thou hast the words of eternal life.” Of this life - Pertaining to life, to the eternal life which they taught through the resurrection of Jesus. The word “life” is used…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-25Verses 17-25 There is no prison so dark, so strong, but God can visit his people in it, and, if he pleases, fetch them out. Recoveries from sickness, releases out of trouble, are granted, not that we may enjoy the comforts of life, but that God may be honoured with the services of our life. It is not for the preachers of Christ's gospel to retire into corners, as long as they can have any opportunity of preaching in the great congregation. They must…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20The irony is that the Sadducees denied the existence of angels (23:8). However, angels appear many times in the book of Acts (see also 10:3, 7, 22; 11:13; 12:6–11, 23; 27:23–24). Luke shows God guiding his people in their ministry, using angels to carry out his purpose.Read the comment
