Context of Acts 5:19
17People liked the apostles very much. So the most important priest and his friends who belonged to the Sadducees' group were very jealous. 18These important men took hold of the apostles and they put them in the city's prison. But during the night, one of the Lord God's angels came and he opened the prison gates. He led the apostles out of the prison. 20The angel said to them, ‘Go and stand in the yard of the temple. Tell the people everything about this new life that God gives.’ 21The apostles did what the angel told them to do. At dawn they went into the yard of the temple. They began to teach the people there. Then the most important priest and his friends arrived. They told the group of Jewish leaders to meet with them. All the most important people in Israel were in that group. Then they sent their police to the prison to bring the apostles to the meeting place.

Commentaries on Acts 5:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19But the angel of the Lord - opened the prison doors - This was done: To increase the confidence of the apostles, by showing them that they were under the continual care of God; and, To show the Jewish rulers that they were fighting against Him while persecuting his followers, and attempting to prevent them from preaching the Gospel. This was another warning graciously given them by a good and merciful God, that they might repent, and so escape the coming…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19But the angel of the Lord - This does not denote any “particular” angel, but simply an angel. The “article” is not used in the original. The word “angel” denotes properly a “messenger,” and particularly it is applied to the pure spirits that are sent to this world on errands of mercy. See the notes on Matthew 1:20. The case here was evidently “a miracle.” An angel was employed for this special purpose, and the design might have been: (1)To reprove the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-25Verses 17-25 There is no prison so dark, so strong, but God can visit his people in it, and, if he pleases, fetch them out. Recoveries from sickness, releases out of trouble, are granted, not that we may enjoy the comforts of life, but that God may be honoured with the services of our life. It is not for the preachers of Christ's gospel to retire into corners, as long as they can have any opportunity of preaching in the great congregation. They must…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20The irony is that the Sadducees denied the existence of angels (23:8). However, angels appear many times in the book of Acts (see also 10:3, 7, 22; 11:13; 12:6–11, 23; 27:23–24). Luke shows God guiding his people in their ministry, using angels to carry out his purpose.Read the comment
