Context of Acts 21:13
11Agabus came to where we were. He took Paul's belt and he tied it around his own feet and hands. He said, ‘Listen to this message from the Holy Spirit. “The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will take hold of the man who has this belt. They will tie his hands and his feet. Then they will give him to the Gentiles to be their prisoner.” ’ 12When we heard Agabus's message, we all said many times to Paul, ‘Please do not go to Jerusalem.’ But Paul answered, ‘Stop crying like this! You are making me very sad! I am ready for men in Jerusalem to take hold of me. They may tie me up, and I may even die there. I am ready for all this because I believe in the Lord Jesus.’ 14We could not cause Paul to think in a different way. So we stopped saying to him, ‘You should not go to Jerusalem.’ Instead we said to him, ‘We want the Lord God to do what he wants.’ 15We stayed in Caesarea for a few days. Then we prepared ourselves to travel across land. We left there to go to Jerusalem.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13What mean ye - Greek: What do ye. A tender and affectionate, but firm reproach. To weep and to break mine heart? - To afflict me, and distract my mind by alarms, and by the expressions of tenderness. His mind was fixed on going to Jerusalem; and he felt that he was prepared for whatever awaited him. Expressions of tenderness among friends are proper. Tears may be inevitable at parting from those whom we love. But such expressions of love ought not to be…Read the comment

Their weeping began to weaken and slacken his resolution Has not our Master told us to take up our cross? It was a trouble to him, that they should so earnestly press him to do that in which he could not…Read the comment

Such dramatic methods of announcing important future events would bring the old prophets to remembrance. (Compare Is 20:2, &c.; Jr 13:1, and Eze 5:1, &c.). This prediction and that at Tyre (Ac 21:4) were intended, not to prohibit him from going, but to put his courage to the test and when he stood the…Read the comment
