Context of Acts 13:50
48When the Gentiles there heard this, they were very happy. They thanked God for the message about the Lord Jesus. Many people believed in Jesus. They were the people that God had chosen to have true life with him. 49Many people in that part of the country heard the message about the Lord Jesus. But the Jewish leaders spoke to the important men in the city. They also spoke to some rich women who worshipped God. The Jewish leaders told them bad things about Paul and Barnabas. So these important people started to speak against Paul and Barnabas. They caused Paul and Barnabas to leave that region. 51So Paul and Barnabas cleaned the dirt of that place off their feet. This showed that the people in that town had done a bad thing. Paul and Barnabas then travelled to a town called Iconium. 52The believers in Antioch continued to be very happy. The Holy Spirit completely filled them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 50Devout and honorable women - It is likely that these were heathen matrons, who had become proselytes to the Jewish religion; and, as they were persons of affluence and respectability, they had considerable influence with the civil magistracy of the place, and probably their husbands were of this order; and it is likely that they used that influence, at the instigation of the Jews, to get the apostles expelled from the place.Read the comment

Perhaps they were proselytes, and were connected with the magistrates of the city. And raised persecution - Probably on the ground that they produced disorder. The aid of “chief men” has often been called into oppose revivals of religion, and to put a period, if possible, to the spread of the gospel. Out of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 42-52Verses 42-52 The Jews opposed the doctrine the apostles preached; and when they could find no objection, they blasphemed Christ and his gospel. Commonly those who begin with contradicting, end with blaspheming. But when adversaries of Christ's cause are daring, its advocates should be the bolder. And while many judge themselves unworthy of eternal life, others, who appear less likely, desire to hear more of the glad tidings of salvation. This is according…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50-51Jewish opposition once again forced Paul and Barnabas out of their district. They shook the dust off their feet as a sign of rejection, as Jesus had taught his disciples (see Matthew 10:14–15; Mark 6:11–12; Luke 9:5–6; 10:10–11). That place was then treated as pagan (not worshiping the true God). Paul and Barnabas left that place in order to reach other people who might be more open to the message of new life in Christ.Read the comment
