Context of Revelation 2:3
1‘Now write this to the angel of the church at Ephesus: “This is the message to you from the one who holds the seven stars. He holds them carefully in his right hand. He walks among the seven gold lampstands. 2I know everything that you do. You have worked much for me. You have continued to work patiently. I know that you do not accept bad people as your friends. Some of these bad people say that they are apostles of Jesus. You have thought carefully about what they teach people. And you have discovered that it is not true. You have been patient and strong in times of trouble. You have continued to serve me because you believe in me. You have not stopped when you become tired. 4But I have something to say against you. You loved me very much when you first believed in me. You do not love me as much now. 5Think carefully about this! You do not now live in the way you did at the beginning. So you must change the way you live. Do again the good things that you did at the beginning. If you do not change the way you live, I will come to punish you. I will take away your lampstand from its place.

Commentaries on Revelation 2:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3And hast borne - The same things mentioned in the preceding verse, but in an inverted order, the particular reason of which does not appear; perhaps it was intended to show more forcibly to this Church that there was no good which they had done, nor evil which they had suffered, that was forgotten before God. And hast not fainted - They must therefore have had a considerable portion of this love remaining, else they could not have thus acted.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3And hast borne - Hast borne up under trials; or hast borne with the evils with which you have been assailed. That is, you have not given way to murmuring or complaints in trial, you have not abandoned the principles of truth and yielded to the prevalence of error. And hast patience - That is, in this connection, hast shown that thou canst bear up under these things with patience. This is a repetition of what is said in Revelation 2:2, but in a somewhat…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3I know: This repeated refrain (Revelation 2:9, 13, 19; 3:1, 8, 15) shows Christ knows everything about his people, their actions, and their situations. The Ephesian Christians had a correct understanding of their beliefs, marked by perseverance and faithfulness. They examined various claims, disciplined evil people, could tell what is true and false, and patiently suffered for their faith in Christ.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. borne ... patience--The oldest manuscripts transpose these words. Then translate as Greek, "persevering endurance ... borne." "Thou hast borne" My reproach, but "thou canst not bear the evil" (Re 2:2). A beautiful antithesis. and ... hast laboured, and hast not fainted--The two oldest manuscripts and oldest versions read, "and ... hast not labored," omitting "and hast fainted." The difficulty which transcribers by English Version reading tried to…Read the comment
