Context of 2 Thessalonians 2:15
13We always thank God for you, our Christian friends that the Lord loves. We ought to thank God, because he has chosen to save you. God chose you to belong to him, as some of the first people that he would save. You believed God's true message. And God's Spirit makes you separate from things that are bad. 14We told you God's good news. That is how God called you to come to him. He saved you so that you would join with our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. Because of that, our Christian friends, you must continue to trust Christ. Continue to believe the true things that we taught you. Those are the things that we told you when we were with you. We also wrote about them in our letter to you. 16We ask our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, our Father, to help you. God has shown that he loves us very much. He has helped us to be brave and strong for all time. We continue to hope for the good things that will come. Yes, God has been very kind to us! 17We pray that he will continue to help you and make you strong. Then you will always be able to do good things and to say good things.

You must stay away from them.

God has given this message to his special people and his message will never change. Do not let anyone teach you a different message.
- 2 Thessalonians 2:2Please do not become easily confused about this. Do not let yourselves become afraid because of false messages about the Lord's return. Some people are telling you that the great day of the Lord's return has already happened. Some of these people say that God's Spirit has shown them a message like that. Other people might say that the message came from us. Or they might say that we wrote it in a letter.
- 2 Thessalonians 3:14Maybe someone among you will not obey the message that we have written in this letter. Make sure that everyone knows about someone like that. Do not be friends with him, so that he may become ashamed.
Commentaries on 2 Thessalonians 2:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Therefore, brethren, stand fast - Their obtaining eternal glory depended on their faithfulness to the grace of God; for this calling did not necessarily and irresistibly lead to faith; nor their faith to the sanctification of the spirit; nor their sanctification of the spirit to the glory of our Lord Jesus. Had they not attended to the calling, they could not have believed; had they not believed, they could not have been sanctified; had they not been…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Therefore - In view of the fact that you are thus chosen from eternity, and that you are to be raised up to such honor and glory. Stand fast - Amidst all the temptations which surround you; compare the notes on Ephesians 6:10-14. And hold the traditions which ye have been taught On the word “traditions,” see the notes on Matthew 15:2. It means properly things delivered over from one to another; then anything orally delivered - any precept, doctrine, or…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-15Verses 13-15 When we hear of the apostacy of many, it is a great comfort and joy, that there is a remnant according to the election of grace, which does and shall persevere; especially we should rejoice, if we have reason to hope that we are of that number. The preservation of the saints, is because God loved them with an everlasting love, from the beginning of the world. The end and the means must not be separated. Faith and holiness must be joined…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15Since the Thessalonian church began, Paul has cared about the stability of their faith (1 Thessalonians 3:2, 5, 8; 4:1–2). He also cares about their commitment to his teachings (2 Thessalonians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 11:2; 15:3; see Jude 1:3).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1515. Therefore--God's sovereign choice of believers, so far from being a ground for inaction on their part, is the strongest incentive to action and perseverance in it. Compare the argument, Php 2:12, 13, "Work out your own salvation, FOR it is God which worketh in you," &c. We cannot fully explain this in theory; but to the sincere and humble, the practical acting on the principle is plain. "Privilege first, duty afterwards" [Edmunds]. stand fast--so as…Read the comment
