Context of 2 Thessalonians 2:15
13We always have to thank God for you, brothers and sisters. You are loved by the Lord and we thank God that in the beginning he chose you to be saved through a life of spiritual devotion and faith in the truth. 14With this in mind he called you by the Good News which we told you so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Then, brothers and sisters, firmly hold on to the traditions we taught you either when we spoke to you or in our letter. 16God our Father loved us and by his kindness gave us everlasting encouragement and good hope. Together with our Lord Jesus Christ, 17may he encourage and strengthen you to do and say everything that is good.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Therefore, brethren, stand fast - Their obtaining eternal glory depended on their faithfulness to the grace of God; for this calling did not necessarily and irresistibly lead to faith; nor their faith to the sanctification of the spirit; nor their sanctification of the spirit to the glory of our Lord Jesus. Had they not attended to the calling, they could not have believed; had they not believed, they could not have been sanctified; had they not been…Read the comment

The preservation of the saints, is because God loved them with an everlasting love, from the beginning of the world. The end and the means must not be separated. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1515. Therefore--God's sovereign choice of believers, so far from being a ground for inaction on their part, is the strongest incentive to action and perseverance in it. Compare the argument, Php 2:12, 13, "Work out your own salvation, FOR it is God which worketh in you," &c. We cannot fully explain this in theory; but to the sincere and humble, the practical acting on the principle is plain. "Privilege first, duty afterwards" [Edmunds]. stand fast--so as…Read the comment
