Context of 1 Corinthians 16:1
You asked me about the money that you want to give to God's people at Jerusalem. You should do it in the same way that I told the churches in Galatia. 2On the first day of every week, each of you should put some of your money in a safe place. Think about how much God has given you. Then decide how much you can give each week. If you do that, the gift will be ready when I come to you. We will not need to start doing it after I come. 3When I arrive there, you should choose people from your group who will take your gift to Jerusalem. I will write some letters that they will take with them. The letters will explain about your gift.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1The collection for the saints - - , from , to gather, or collect; translated by the Vulgate, de collectis, a contribution made by the rich for the relief of the poor. The Christians living at Jerusalem, we may naturally suppose, were greatly straitened; as the enmity of their countrymen to the Gospel of Christ led them to treat those who professed it with cruelty, and spoil them of their goods; (see Hebrews 10:34; and Romans 15:26; and see the note Romans…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1Now concerning the collection for the saints - The use of the article here shows that he had mentioned it to them before, and that it was a subject which they would readily understand. Accordingly, all his instructions relate simply to the manner in…Read the comment
