Context of Mark 5:11
9“What is your name?” he asked him. “My name is Legion,” he answered him, “because we are many.” 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region. A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. 12The demons begged him, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13So he gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-13The spirits kept begging Jesus, which shows his authority over them. Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs. The pigs show that this was Gentile (non-Jewish) territory. Some people focus on the loss of the pigs or ask why Jesus allowed the demons to destroy them. But Mark and his audience focused on how Jesus saved the man.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Now there was there, nigh unto the mountains--rather, "to the mountain," according to what is clearly the true reading. In Mt 8:30, they are said to have been "a good way off." But these expressions, far from being inconsistent, only confirm, by their precision, the minute accuracy of the narrative. a great herd of swine feeding--There can hardly be any doubt that the owners of these were Jews, since to them our Lord had now come to proffer His…Read the comment
