Context of Mark 5:11
9Then Jesus asked the man, ‘What is your name?’ The man replied, ‘My name is Army because there are so many bad spirits in me.’ 10He said to Jesus many times, ‘Please do not send these bad spirits away from this place.’ A large group of pigs was eating on the hill. 12The bad spirits said, ‘Jesus, send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.’ 13Jesus let them do this. So the bad spirits came out of the man and they went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs. They rushed together down the hill into the lake. All the pigs died there in the water.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-13The spirits kept begging Jesus, which shows his authority over them. Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs. The pigs show that this was Gentile (non-Jewish) territory. Some people focus on the loss of the pigs or ask why Jesus allowed the demons to destroy them. But Mark and his audience focused on how Jesus saved the man.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Now there was there, nigh unto the mountains--rather, "to the mountain," according to what is clearly the true reading. In Mt 8:30, they are said to have been "a good way off." But these expressions, far from being inconsistent, only confirm, by their precision, the minute accuracy of the narrative. a great herd of swine feeding--There can hardly be any doubt that the owners of these were Jews, since to them our Lord had now come to proffer His…Read the comment
